• Chris Hower (1983-2025)

I made a lot of great memories. I love you all.

  • Chris Hower, 42, of Portland, Oregon, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025.

Raised in Boca Raton, Florida, Chris graduated from Spanish River High School, University of Florida, and George Washington University Law School. After law school, he worked as an Intellectual Property attorney in New York at Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy. Later, he dedicated his career to justice, as a financial regulator for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission, where he worked to hold institutions accountable to a fair and equitable set of rules.

A man of curiosity and endless appetite for new experiences, Chris loved to travel, visiting over 80 countries. He was an accomplished scuba diver, exploring reefs, caves, and other underwater sites across the globe. He loved all animals—especially dogs and marine life.

He had a knack for ordering the best dish or drink at a restaurant or bar. He rarely drank or ate the same thing twice, preferring to experience new things.

At home, he was a talented cook, mixing craft cocktails and making meals, some of which he recreated from his travels. He adored movies, even bad ones. He was an excellent photographer, with a particular knack at capturing images of wildlife that captured their personalities.

Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with friends, of which he had many across the US and the globe about whom he cared deeply and who cared deeply about him. People appreciated his intelligence, wit, and - most of all - his authenticity.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; his parents, Jeanne and Al; his sister, Samantha; his nephew, Jameson; and his beloved dog, Hazel. An informal memorial was held on August 17 with his friends and family.

Donations can be made to the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees) to provide relief to the living victims of what Chris unequivocally condemned as Israel's genocide and forced famine in Gaza.

He leaves behind a world better for his presence, and a community that remembers his authenticity, his humor, his kindness, his immense appetite for life, and his unwavering belief that we all deserve to live in a fairer world. He will be missed.
